The NCAA women’s tennis singles title defense bid for top-ranked and No. 2 seed Estela Perez-Somarriba of the Miami Hurricanes came up just short with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat to third-seeded Emma Navarro of Virginia in the championship on Friday afternoon at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
Perez-Somarriba capped a remarkable career in which she won the 2019 singles title as a junior and reached the final four as a freshman in 2017. The Madrid, Spain native is UM’s career singles wins leader.
“I look back, and it’s been a dream, honestly,” said Perez-Somarriba, who handed Navarro her only singles loss when they met in the regular season.
