The redshirt junior assumed the mantle of mentor to a group of young defensive backs in Corey Thornton, Justin Hodges and Davonte Brown. The freshmen are earning significant playing time, with Thornton starting three games so far this season.
“This season for me, I kind of embraced it because I treat them like little brothers. I never had a brother like that,” Maxwell said. “If they have questions, I’m always telling them to hit me up.”
Maxwell appeared in 25 games the past two seasons, starting six games in 2019 behind Tay Gowan and Nevelle Clarke. But with Clarke graduating and Gowan opting out of this season due to COVID-19 concerns, Maxwell accepted a bigger assignment a consistent starter for the Knights.
