UCF began the season with one of the most experienced defensive back units in college football, but after losing a pair of veteran starters, coaches are pleased with the way several newcomers have responded.
Young players have filled key roles this year. The Knights have started three true freshmen at cornerback during various stretches this season.
Corey Thornton has started every game this year, while Davonte Brown (2) and Justin Hodges (1) have earned starts during select games. Thornton and Brown have teamed to start the past two games against Tulane and Houston.
“Those guys have earned the right to take over those starting roles,” UCF coach Josh Heupel said of Thornton and Brown’s performances so far this season.
