Today in Central Florida sports history: UF catcher Mike Zunino becomes Gators only Golden Spikes Award winner

GAINESVILLE — UF catcher Mike Zunino entered the 2012 season as the reigning SEC Player of the Year and already one of the most accomplished players in school history.

On this date eight years ago, Zunino capped his decorated career in Gainesville by earning the Golden Spikes Award, given the nation’s top amateur baseball player. Still the only UF player to win the illustrious honor, Zunino captured the UF Triple Crown that season, batting .322, with 67 RBI and 19 home runs.

Zunino won Golden Spikes Award, the Dick Howser Trophy and the Johnny Bench Award in 2012, joining Florida State’s Buster Posey (2008) as the only player to win all three awards during the same season.
