A dramatic penalty shootout concluded an already historic matchup with an underdog triumph Saturday night.
Blue and green confetti showered the field as the Seattle Sounders hoisted the MLS Cup as first-time champions over Toronto FC, beating the home team in penalties 0-0 (5-4) at BMO Field.
It was only the fourth time in league history the MLS Cup was decided by penalty kicks, and the first time a champion failed to register a shot on goal.
After six rounds of penalty shots, it was Seattle’s Roman Torres who netted the winning goal, getting the ball past Toronto goalkeeper Clint Irwin.
