The Seattle Sounders were four minutes from advancing to the Concacaf Champions League quarterfinals before disaster struck at CenturyLink Field.
The reigning MLS Cup champion conceded an equalizer in the 86th minute and then fell in penalty kicks to Honduran side Club Olimpia.
Olimpia earned an early advantage, but Seattle answered with two goals, which would have been enough to put it through on aggregate. However, the 86th-minute strike from Carlos Pineda leveled the series on aggregate, and two misses in the shootout doomed Seattle’s CCL chances.
Brian Schmetzer’s side got off to a less-than-ideal start in the fourth minute, when Elvin Oliva struck off a set piece to put the visitors ahead.
