SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Earthquakes were riding high after an inspiring comeback against Toronto FC on opening day, but they were brought back down to earth in stunning fashion Saturday by a thoroughly dominant Minnesota United.
Ike Opara scored twice for the Loons, while MLS newcomer Luis Amarilla added a goal and an assist for the visitors, as Minnesota won 5-2 at Earthquakes Stadium. Magnus Eriksson and Vako scored for San Jose in the defeat, their third in a row to the Loons stretching back to last season.
The five goals allowed by the Quakes matched a club record for futility, last set in 2019 when Los Angeles FC shut then out 5-0.
