A much-anticipated 2019 for the Portland Timbers, which included the revitalization of one of the best home venues in Major League Soccer, ended with a thud in the form of a first-round playoff exit.
That led the Timbers front office to retool its lineup slightly, though reliable anchors like Sebastian Blanco, Diego Valeri and Diego Chara remain with the team for 2020.
In fact, the Timbers doubled down on Charas by bringing in Diego’s younger brother Yimmi, a 28-year-old assist-minded winger who has played the past two seasons in Brazil. That, plus some striker replacements for the star-crossed Brian Fernandez, has the Timbers looking solid enough to vie for a playoff spot once again.
