Phil Mickelson, 50, takes a 1-shot lead into the final round of the PGA Championship, seeking to become the oldest major champion

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. — Phil Mickelson held on to his lead at the PGA Championship despite struggling on the back nine.

Mickelson shot a 70 on Saturday and was at 7-under 209 for the tournament. He’ll carry a one-shot lead over Brooks Koepka into Sunday’s final round as he tries for his sixth career major and second PGA title.

At 50 years, 11 months, Mickelson would be the oldest major champion by more than 2½ years. Julius Boros was 48 years, 4 months when he won the 1968 PGA.

Mickelson made a 5-foot for par on the closing hole to keep his lead through 54 holes.
