The Orlando Pride recorded a 1-1 draw with the Washington Spirit despite a jolt of energy from Brazilian superstar Marta, who came off the bench during the club’s home opener.
After landing in Orlando less than 48 hours before kickoff following a long journey from Sweden, Pride coach Tom Sermanni opted to use Marta as a substitute rather than a starter.
The Pride earned a 58.3 percent to 41.7 percent percentage edge in the first half, but the club once again struggled to finish in the final third.
After the crowd chanted, “Marta, Marta,” Sermanni inserted her into the lineup in the 59th minute, replacing fellow Brazilian Monica.
