Orlando City will appeal the red card called on captain Nani in Wednesday night’s match against Columbus, a club source confirmed.
The call occurred in the 49th minute, when Nani’s studs connected with the leg of the Crew’s Artur during a tackle. After the match, the PRO referee team specified the foul was called for “Serious Foul Play for a straight leg tackle, contact with studs above the ankle.”
The referee initially only gave a yellow card, but after review upgraded the foul to a red card because he “originally thought that the contact was low on the foot and reckless” rather than above the ankle.
