Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19 and recognizes the anniversary of the day in 1865 date when Union soldiers announced the end of the Civil War in Galveston, Texas. The moment marked the final observance of slavery in the U.S. almost three years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
The club announcement came after Orlando City chief administrative officer Caesar Lopez wrote a letter to the club’s fans two weeks ago in the wake of nationwide protests against police brutality and racism. Since then, the club has pledged to discussing race internally and providing support for the black community in Orlando.
