The National Women’s Soccer League announced several rule changes Monday to accommodate the unique structure of the Challenge Cup that kicks off later this week.
The league is eliminating extra time for all Challenge Cup matches. All games will end at the final whistle, without the typical addition of minutes for breaks in play, injuries or substitutions. If a match is tied at the end of regular playing time, it will be moved immediately into a penalty kick shootout.
This structure could add to the drama of the tournament, but it will also provide relief to players who playing a tournament after three months of quarantine.
