No new teams will be joining the National Women’s Soccer League for the 2020 season.
The league announced Thursday that it will remain at nine teams for the upcoming year, despite reports that an expansion side in Sacramento would join the NWSL in 2020.
“The league continues to engage in substantive discussions with several potential expansion groups with the possibility of announcing additional teams for the 2021 season in early 2020,” the league said in a statement Thursday.
At least one team will join the NWSL in 2021. It was announced in October that an expansion side in Louisville, Kentucky will begin play then.
