NFL owners approve 17-game regular season; Dolphins to now face NFC East opponent at home

Team owners on Tuesday approved the 17th game, marking the first time in 43 years the regular season has been increased. It went from 14 to 16 games in 1978.

In March, NBC Sports’ Peter King laid out the scenarios for the 17-game season. The Miami Dolphins and the rest of the AFC East will play the NFC East in 2021, with teams playing the corresponding team in the other division based on which place the teams finished in 2020.

With the Dolphins (10-6) finishing in second place in the AFC East in 2020 and the Giants (6-10) finishing in second place in the NFC East, they will face each other in 2021′s regular-season finale.
