The NCAA Board of Governors approved a proposal that allows athletes to profit from endorsement and promotional deals, a monumental change for college athletics expected to be approved by all members in January and go into effect in 2021.
However, the board stated legal issues prevent it from committing to group licensing, obstructing the potential resurrection of the popular NCAA Football video game or any similar games. The NCAA board suggested organization leaders should keep exploring the issue and would likely need clarification from Congress on its ability to provide group licenses.
Under the plan, athletes can profit on third-party endorsement deals.
