Montverde Academy saw its national No. 1 status and two-year boys basketball winning streak hanging by a thread in a clash of unbeatens on Thursday night but dominated overtime to rescue a 76-65 home court win against AZ Compass Prep of Arizona.
The victory, marking 41 in a row for the Eagles (16-0), came in the opening day of the two-weekend Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament. Compass arrived with a 17-0 record and No. 10 national ranking by MaxPreps.
The game went to overtime tied at 61 after a layup by Montverde guard Ryan Nembhard was ruled to have come after the buzzer sounded.
