“Work hard, and always be respectful. That’s what my parents taught me,” said Edwin Gotay, NASCAR’s senior director of growth segment marketing as he proudly waved a Puerto Rican flag by his desk.
“I had to change the perception that this sport was limited to a group of people, white males from the south,” said Gotay.
“The first project I had was in Puerto Rico with that pilot in 2014,” said Gotay recalling a trip with Suárez to promote the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) initiative.
Suárez became the first Mexican-born driver to win a NASCAR national series race in 2016 with his Xfinity Series victory at Michigan International Speedway.
