The NASCAR Cup Series will return to Daytona International Speedway in August, but not for the same high-speed thrill-a-minute style of racing that fans have come to expect at the storied track.
For the first time, stock car racing’s top drivers will take on the speedway’s road course, best known for hosting a 24-hour team race in January.
NASCAR will stage a 65-lap race set for 3 p.m. Aug. 16 on a 3.56-mile, 12-turn road course encompassing portions of the infield, the backstretch and turns 3 and 4. In the latest schedule adjustment due to the pandemic, the road race will replace an event originally scheduled for Watkins Glen International in New York and culminate three days of racing at Daytona International Speedway.
