Minnesota Twins throw behind Yermín Mercedes before rallying from a 4-run deficit to beat the Chicago White Sox 5-4

MINNEAPOLIS — The Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins combined for five home runs Tuesday at Target Field, a game the Twins won 5-4 on a walkoff single in the ninth by Jorge Polanco.

Twins reliever Tyler Duffey threw a pitch behind Sox designated hitter Yermín Mercedes in the seventh. Duffey and Twins manager Rocco Baldelli were ejected.

It was an apparent retaliation for Mercedes’ solo home run Monday on a 3-0 pitch from utility player Willians Astudillo in the ninth inning of a 16-4 win.

“That’s the umpire’s opinion,” Sox manager Tony La Russa said of the seventh inning.
