Michael Mancienne accepts large pay cut to stay with New England Revolution

BOSTON, Mass. – Michael Mancienne is taking a steep pay cut to remain with the New England Revolution.

The English center back, who has been one of the highest-earning defensive players in Major League Soccer for the past two seasons, signed a new, one-year contract Monday that will pay him $400,000, excluding bonuses, two sources confirmed to Pro Soccer USA. The new deal includes one club option year.

A Revolution spokesperson declined to comment on the specifics of Mancienne’s contract.

That New England declined Mancienne’s 2020 contract option – which would have paid him $1 million – and persuaded him to sign a more modest deal is a significant bit of negotiating by Revolution head coach and sporting director Bruce Arena, who started this week with only two true center backs on his roster.
