The Orlando Magic made St. Paul, Minn., native Jalen Suggs of Gonzaga the No. 5 selection in the 2021 NBA Draft on Thursday night, marking a big day for young athletes from the St. Paul area.
Earlier in the day, Team USA gymnast Suni Lee, the replacement in the women’s all-around competition for Simone Biles, won the competition with a surprising performance as an alternate.
Lee kept alive the U.S. string of 17-straight victories in the competition, which was highlighted by the most difficult uneven bars routine at the Tokyo Games.
Both Lee and Suggs are good friends and as soon as the former Gonzaga point guard heard the news, he reached out to the gymnast.
