The Miami Dolphins installed Brian Flores’ complicated 3-4 hybrid defense with spare parts claimed off the waiver wire in Year 1.
And the desired outcome wasn’t even close to Flores’ standards as Miami finished that season dead last in points allowed (494), and it was the worst scoring output allowed in franchise history.
The defensive coordinator was changed, and Miami went on a spending spree the following offseason, mostly on the defensive side of the ball to patch the many leaks.
As a result the Dolphins produced one of the NFL’s most versatile and opportunistic defenses in 2020, one that spent most of the season ranked amongst the league’s top-five units.
