Chan Gailey is 68. He’s coached football since 1974. He began in college before moving to the pros, returned to college and then returned to the pros. Subtract the three years he was out of football before becoming the Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator and that’s 43 years of coaching at a high level.
The unusual part is that’s not unusual. It’s almost every coach’s story. Gary Stevens coached for more than three decades when the last Dolphins left-handed quarterback to start a game, Scott Mitchell, was needed when starter Dan Marino tore his Achilles in 1993.
