Miami Hurricanes striker Gilbert Frierson has earned praise from UM coaches this week as “maybe our best player on defense, he and [safety] Bubba Bolden,” as coach Manny Diaz put it following the loss at No. 1 Clemson.
The redshirt sophomore had six tackles, three for loss, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup on the road against the Tigers on Saturday night.
“Gilbert played outstanding Saturday night, probably his best game since I’ve been here,” defensive coordinator Blake Baker said.
Frierson, originally a cornerback as a recruit out of Coral Gables High and his first season at Miami in 2018, had to build himself physically to be able to play the safety-linebacker hybrid position of striker.
