GAINESVILLE — For a chance to compete for college golf’s ultimate prize, the Florida Gators made the ultimate road trip.
A 3,000-mile trek to the wilds, winds, hail and chill of Washington’s Cascade Range for NCAA Regionals two weeks ago was just the first step of UF’s journey.
After a few days recuperating back in Gainesville, the Gators boarded a plane and headed West again. This time, coach J.C. Deacon’s team made a 2,000-mile trip to the searing heat and single-digit humidity of Scottsdale, Ariz., for the NCAA Championships.
Deacon hoped this time his talented yet callow squad would be able to play to its potential and avoid too many final-round dramatics.
