Jeremiah Connelly intercepted a pass, then rushed for a 19-yard touchdown with 16 seconds remaining Friday night to help Edgewater claim its third consecutive Class 7A football region championship.
The Eagles (6-2) survived a back-and-forth battle with previously unbeaten New Port Richey Mitchell (11-1) to come away with a 28-21 win at home.
Edgewater, ranked No. 3 in the Sentinel Super 16 and No 2 in its classification by MaxPreps,, plays in a state semifinal Friday at undefeated Niceville (11-0), which won 35-18 at Orange Park Fleming Island (9-3). The Golden Eagles were No. 3 on the MaxPreps power rating list going into Friday.
