Dr. Phillips basketball banks on young talent vs. Oak Ridge in state semifinal

The roster says the Dr. Phillips boys basketball team, with just one senior starter, is probably too young to win a state championship this weekend.

“We can’t use our youth to be an excuse for anything,” Witherspoon said with clear conviction this week. “We’re not a senior-heavy team, but we’re an experienced team. We expect our guys to get it done. They have enough experience to do so.”

The Panthers (25-3), ranked No. 2 in the MaxPreps Class 7A Florida rankings, will play No. 1 Oak Ridge (23-2) in an all-Orlando state semifinal Friday at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland.
