All Dr. Phillips varsity boys basketball players got a 6:55 a.m. Face Time wakeup call from their coaches Monday morning.

“We were worried about guys not getting up and not being ready to play a 9 a.m. game,” Panthers head coach Ben Witherspoon said.

Turns out, DP’s players were on time and on point. The Panthers, one of the preseason favorites in the Orlando area, used a balanced attack to roll to an 80-37 win against outmanned Winter Park on opening day of the 2020-21 high school season.

The early game was one of seven played at The Well Center Activities Center in Apopka as part of the inaugural three-day Metro Hoop Fest.
