MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins and star cornerback Xavien Howard have reached an agreement on a restructured contract, keeping the All-Pro in Miami and presumably happy after he requested a trade at the start of training camp.
Howard becomes the first player in NFL history to have a deal redone or adjusted with four years left on the contract.
“We were working on it, and we’re excited to have gotten this done,” Dolphins coach Brian Flores said. “We’re just looking forward to continually improving with X and, really, his teammates on a day-to-day basis.”
Added as incentives in the restructured deal, according to agent David Canter: $1 million for a Pro Bowl or All-Pro season, bonuses for snap percentages played -- $1 million at 90 percent and $750,000 at each 80 and 70 percent – and Howard will have his $93,000 in fines from missing mandatory minicamp rescinded.
