The COVID-19 complications that all Florida high school coaches fear played a major role in the first big upset in the Orlando area boys basketball playoffs on Wednesday night.
Windermere Prep, the top seed in Class 3A District 4, played without five players due to COVID issues and lost 54-52 in a semifinal home game against fourth seed Trinity Prep — a squad that dealt with its own coronavirus troubles all season.
The loss eliminated the Lakers (16-6), who had won 11 of their previous 12 games. Only district champions and runners-up advance to next Thursday’s region quarterfinal games.
