COLUMBUS, Ohio— What looked to be a tough first game on paper became a good deal easier when the Columbus Crew took a man advantage over New York City FC in just the third minute and came away with a 1-0 victory over the reigning Eastern Conference champions.
Maxime Chanot tripped up new Crew designated player Lucas Zelarayan as he streaked towards the net, picking up a red card for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity. Despite the early lead, Columbus was unable to break through a stout New York defense, mustering only one shot on goal in the first half.
