Entering the 2020 season, the Chicago Red Stars faced a simple but critical question — could they score consistently enough goals to win?
That question hounded the team throughout the opening rounds of the NWSL Challenge Cup, as Chicago squeaked by with only two goals during its first five matches of the tournament.
But during the opening minutes of Wednesday’s semifinal match against Sky Blue FC, the Red Stars finally found an answer. The floodgates opened and the team scored twice in the opening 11 minutes of the match, then held on for a 3-2 win over Sky Blue FC to earn a place in the championship match against the Houston Dash.
