When he picked up the phone Friday morning in his Palmer Township home, Larry Holmes was having fun with being referred to as Ernie Holmes by President Donald Trump during his campaign appearance in the Scranton area on Thursday.
Trump might have been mixing Holmes up former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Ernie “Arrowhead” Holmes, a two-time Super Bowl champion and part of the legendary Steel Curtain defense.
Or, as local TV personality and close Holmes friend Mike Mittman suggested, Trump might have been thinking of Earnie Shavers, who fought against Holmes for the world title in 1978.
