Brian Flores claims contract discussions with Xavien Howard are ‘moving in right direction’

The Miami Dolphins will get an extended look at the secondary without the team’s top player, because cornerback Xavien Howard continues to sit out practice.

His absence has been obvious, considering Tua Tagovailoa and the rest of Miami’s quarterbacks have been carving up Miami’s secondary. The passing offense has pulled off many big-play touchdowns in practice this first week against the Dolphins’ first-team secondary, which has been using Byron Jones and Noah Igbinoghene as the starting cornerbacks.

The official reason for Howard’s limited practice participation is an ankle injury, according to coach Brian Flores.

“Howard has a set-back on the ankle, and we will hold him out,” Flores said on Monday, disclosing an injury for the first time all training camp.
