Boone High’s Exavian Westbrook was in eighth grade the last time he returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
On Friday, the junior two-way player scored on a 93-yard return early in the fourth quarter to help the visiting Braves (1-0) pull away from Timber Creek (0-1) during a 41-21 win.
Boone entered Week 1 of the high school football regular season at No. 9 in the Sentinel Super 16 area rankings. Timber Creek opened at No. 16.
“It’s been a while,” Westbrook said with a smile. “He kicked it wide [to his left] and I just went to the big side of the field and cut in, and there was nobody there, so I just used my speed to get into open field and run.
