The Big Ten on Tuesday became the first of college football’s Power Five conferences to postpone its fall sports season because of health and safety concerns about competing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The move likely will reverberate throughout college sports as conferences and universities grapple with the financial fallout of a canceled season and the risk of coronavirus breakouts on campuses.
Less than two hours after the Big Ten’s announcement, the Pacific-12 also postponed its season. The other three Power Five conferences — the Southeastern, Atlantic Coast and Big 12 — still plan to play football this fall.
