Four years and more than 100 lost pounds later, Apopka’s Petey Vergos has a college bowling national championship to go with the stack of state titles he won as a record-setting high school bowler.
Vergos, Florida’s only two-time boys high school champion, won the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Singles Championship on Saturday as a senior for perennial power Calument College of Whiting, Indiana.
Vergos, who worked out and dieted while dropping more than 100 pounds during the COVID-19 shutdown, beat Alec Kepling of team champion Wichita State in the one-game individual championship game match. His father, Demetrios, was in the crowd watching at the Spectrum Entertainment Complex in Wyoming, Michigan, near Grand Rapids.
