Apopka used yet another big play by senior standout Jaquan Lowman and two blocked kicks to beat Lake Mary 7-6 in high school football region championship game that was a defensive duel on Friday night.
Lake Mary led Apopka 6-0 through three quarters in the Class 8A, Region 2 final on the strength of an 8-yard touchdown pass from Gunnar Smith to Rocco Underwood. Blue Darters defensive standout Nikai Martinez blocked the Rams extra point try.
Those special team plays proved to be crucial after Apopka (8-3) scored when Lowman broke free for a 58-yard TD run in the first minute of the final quarter.
