Luton – a transfer from Ventura College – dealt with an illness during spring practice but quickly established himself as the starter early in fall camp, leading to the transfer of potential backup Marcus McMaryion. Luton has the size (6-foot-7, 234 pounds) and arm to be an elite pocket passer but will need to build chemistry with a relatively inexperienced receiving corps as he takes his first snaps as a Power Five conference quarterback. Garretson has starting experience as the clear-cut backup and better mobility, although was limited with his arm before a broken ankle ended his junior season.
