Mikayla Pivec spends basketball offseason throwing javelin for Oregon State

CORVALLIS -- Shortly after Oregon State's NCAA Tournament run, Mikayla Pivec brought a proposition to coach Scott Rueck. That conversation then led Pivec, the Beavers' standout freshman guard, to the office of head track and field coach Kelly Sullivan.

Pivec had transitioned from basketball to track and field each spring throughout high school. Now she's OSU's latest two-sport athlete, throwing the javelin in three meets, including the Pac-12 Championships earlier this month.

"You only get four years of college," Pivec said. "Looking back on the college experience, I didn't want to say, 'Hey, I wish I had actually gone out and tried javelin.
