There was a lot happening yesterday in track & field, with the marquee meets unfolding at Penn and Drake, and the Oregon State Beavers playing host to their two-day, High Performance Meet.
Then the Jesuit Twilight Relays in Portland elbowed into the national spotlight, when high school senior Michael Slagowski cracked the four-minute barrier in the mile.
Slagowksi, who attends Rocky Mountain High School in Meridian, Idaho, pushed himself through the final 800 meters to finish in 3 minutes, 59.53 seconds.
He shattered his personal record by six seconds while becoming the ninth U.S. high school student to finish the mile in under four minutes.
