Former Oregon State basketball star and NBA champion Lonnie Shelton died Sunday, his family confirmed to news outlets in his hometown of Bakersfield, California.
Shelton was 62. His son, L.J., told the Bakersfield Sun that Shelton had been hospitalized since suffering a heart attack May 5.
Shelton is best remembered for helping end a long UCLA winning streak while at Oregon State, his departure for the pros before his junior season before returning to Corvallis after fighting legal battles against the NCAA, and playing forward on Seattle's only NBA title team.
