Gary Payton II earning solid reviews at NBA draft combine

Thursday marked the second day of the NBA draft combine in Chicago, where point guard Gary Payton II became the first Oregon State player to attend the event since Jared Cunningham in 2012.

The two-time Pac-12 defensive player of the year earned generally positive reviews for his performance, which included a full-court, 40-minute game of 5-on-5 with other pro prospects. Payton had eight points (4 for 6), four assists, one rebound, one steal and two turnovers in 23 minutes of action.

That game aired as part of a four-hour broadcast on ESPN2, in which college basketball analyst Jay Bilas briefly dissected his offensive game following a missed midrange jumpshot.
