BEND -- In between spring practice sessions, Darell Garretson picked up the phone to call his dad, Rick.
The Oregon State quarterback needed a pep talk from the man he calls his best friend. Garretson spilled that he was down on himself while in the thick of another starting quarterback derby, following his 2016 season that was disappointing statistically and then cut short by a broken leg.
"He kind of got my mind switched," Garretson recalled. "Parents know you better than you know yourselves sometimes, right? He got me right."
Garretson's ankle is now fully healed, allowing him to take snaps with the starters and backups during fall camp and comfortably slice through the middle of the defense with the ball in his hands.
