Former Nebraska head coach Mike Riley, who was fired by the Cornhuskers after a 4-8 season this year, is returning to Oregon State as an assistant coach, new Beavers head coach Jonathan Smith announced.

Riley served as the head coach at Oregon State from 1997-98 and then again from 2003-14 before leaving for Nebraska. He led the Beavers to a winning record in eight of those seasons, including four seasons with at least nine wins.
However, Riley struggled at Nebraska, going 19-19 in three seasons with a lowly 12-14 mark in Big Ten play.
Smith has spent the past four seasons as Washington's offensive coordinator before being hired by OSU last week.
