In what has to be the saddest video I’ve ever watched in my life, the historic East Grandstands at Hayward Field started to come down today as the stadium prepares for a massive overhaul.
There has been plenty of controversy surrounding the new design, which will not resemble the original Hayward Field in any way, shape or form. Originally, Nike’s Tinker Hatfield, who has a degree in architecture from the University of Oregon, had come up with a design that preserved, yet modernized the East Grandstands. For reasons unknown, his design was rejected. Earlier this month, Hatfield publicly criticized the new design.
