EUGENE -- The statue of the late Bill Bowerman stands on the northwest corner of Hayward Field, just off the track.
The iconic former University of Oregon track coach and Nike co-founder is frozen in time, stopwatch in hand.
Bowerman looks out at the 99-year-old stadium that has hosted six U.S. Olympic trials and the World Junior Championships, and that bore raucous witness to extraordinary performances by athletes such as Steve Prefontaine and Ashton Eaton.
But in the coming months, the stadium Bowerman knew will likely disappear for good, the grandstands leveled and rebuilt according to plans few have seen.
