Derrick Harmon enrolled at Michigan State in 2021 as a 3-star recruit coming out Loyola High School in Detroit, MI. He appeared in only one game his true freshman season, the end of the regular season against Land Grant Trophy rival Penn State, preserving his redshirt. He was part of the regular rotation on the defensive line in 2022 and started every game in 2023. Following the 2023 season he entered his name in the transfer portal in December, taking official visits to Auburn, Ohio State, and Oregon. Harmon withdrew from the portal in late December and went through spring practice at Michigan State with new head coach Jonathan Smith.
