Oregon senior Sabrina Southerland patiently bided her time in the 800-meter final at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, then went for broke on the final lap.
In third place at the bell, Southerland shifted gears, rocketed into the lead around the final turn and pulled away to win the race in 2 minutes 1.55 seconds Saturday before 5,280 at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium in College Station, Texas.
Southerland's victory helped the UO women bounce back from a tough first day of the meet and finish fifth overall. Georgia won the women's meet with 61 points.
